The company with the best leadership in the U.S. isn't a tech titan or hospitality giant: It's management consulting firm Bain & Company. That's according to Glassdoor, which released on Tuesday its inaugural 50 Best-Led Companies ranking. The list measures how effectively bosses communicate and foster healthy company cultures, based on the workplace review website's anonymous employee ratings. Beyond Bain, the tech industry does occupy much of the list — 12 companies, more than any other sector. Consulting, finance and retail are the next-most represented industries, with six companies appearing from each.

Ilya Sutskever, the OpenAI co-founder and chief scientist who in November joined three other board members to force out Sam Altman, the company’s high-profile chief executive, before saying he regretted the move, is leaving the San Francisco A.I. After returning to OpenAI just five days after he was ousted, Mr. Altman reasserted his control and continued its push toward increasingly powerful technologies that worried some of his critics. Dr. Sutskever remained an OpenAI employee, but he never returned to work. “This is an emotional day for all of us,” Mr. Altman said in an interview. “OpenAI would not exist without him and certainly was shaped by him.”

With no federal oversight of workplace benefits like paid leave and caregiving policies, corporate leaders are being asked to take the lead. Goldman Sachs , American Express , Deckers Outdoor, S&P Global and Splunk are the top companies for parents in 2024, according to Just Capital's research. The "indirect costs" are the loss of productivity during an employee's leave, temporary replacement and cost of administering a paid leave program. "Paid parental leave is an expensive proposition," said Yvette Lee, an HR knowledge advisor at SHRM. Lee said the investment in paid parental leave and similar policies may make sense in the long run.

Read previewAs a 40-plus-year veteran of the corporate world and the former VP of HR at Microsoft, I've seen a lot of people successfully negotiate their job offers. They want youThe most important thing to understand in the job hunt is that by the time you see an offer, they want you. They've made the offer a little slimmer than they expect to end up because they know there will be movement. It's not all about base payWhen most people think about negotiating a job offer, they often think about base pay, or the salary or hourly rate. So negotiate that job offer, and get what you deserve.

The Biden administration will give Micron up to $6.1 billion in grants to help build its semiconductor plants in New York and Idaho, the latest multibillion dollar award aimed at ramping up the nation’s production of vital semiconductors. More than a year ago, Micron announced plans to expand its manufacturing footprint in the United States. In September 2022, the company said it would build a $15 billion factory in its hometown, Boise, Idaho, the first new U.S. memory chip plant in 20 years. The complex could eventually include up to four new manufacturing plants. Company officials have said the investment is expected to create roughly 50,000 jobs, including about 9,000 direct positions at its plants.

New York CNN —California just raised the minimum wage for the state’s fast food sector workers by $4 to $20. And, although many casual observers disagree, higher wages for fast food workers could actually help fast food owners, Dongoski said. New Delhi has sought to woo foreign tech companies and has been increasingly successful, with giants like Apple increasing their presence in the country. Tom Chitty: For years China has been Asia's tech powerhouse where the world's electronics and some of the biggest companies on the planet are located. And I think India is in the very early stages, to put it quite bluntly, of trying to do that. Tom Chitty: India have got an election this year as well, which is going to be interesting to see what happens there. You know, India has aligned itself slightly more to the countries that are currently a bit more anti-China, shall we say?

The Port of Baltimore said in a post on X that vessel traffic was suspended until further notice, but trucks were still being processed at its terminals. It said it would discharge cargo destined for Baltimore in other ports nearby, but Maesrk warned customers that could mean delays. Closer to the Midwest than any other port on the East Coast, Baltimore is a major hub for vehicles, containers and commodities. Baltimore ranks first among US ports for autos and light trucks, handling a record 850,000 vehicles last year. While many of the 30,000 to 35,000 cars and trucks that used the Key Bridge daily can be rerouted through the two nearby tunnels, that will cause traffic delays.

Former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is building an investor group to acquire ByteDance's TikTok, as a bipartisan piece of legislation winding its way through Congress threatens its continued existence in the U.S. "It's a great business and I'm going to put together a group to buy TikTok." There's no way that the Chinese would ever let a U.S. company own something like this in China," Mnuchin said. “It’s a challenging consumer environment,” said Ian Borden, McDonald’s CFO, noting that many consumers are trying to manage inflation, higher interest rates and dwindling savings. That includes their spending on food at restaurants such as McDonald’s, fast-food restaurants that historically prize value and affordability as core business values. According to February inflation data in the Consumer Price Index, food at home prices grew 1% year over year, while restaurant prices rose 4.5% over the last year. But the current surge in restaurant prices has flipped the script from a year ago, when it was cheaper to dine out. At that time, restaurant prices were up 8.4% and grocery prices were up 10.2% year over year.

Following the Foot Locker debacle earlier this week, there could be more turmoil in the retailer space. Because publicly traded companies provide quarterly financial reports, historic revenue growth and earnings multiples are available to everyone. Earlier this week, I wrote that Foot Locker 's outperformance relative to Nike was hard to comprehend. Dick's did not fall in sympathy with Foot Locker as Academy did, and admittedly Dick's is a very different business than Foot Locker. Observe that their revenues have more than tripled over the past 10 years even as Foot Locker has languished: That said, broader economic trends, while they may not affect all businesses equally, still matter.
